Two prominent Russian song authors will visit UCSD next week (May 13 -- May 17)
ALEXANDER DULOV, Russian folk song writer and scientist, will sing at the International Center Monday May 13, 1996 at 7 p.m.
Dulov has been held in high esteem since the mid-50's as an author of music to some of the most popular pieces of common student folklore. Eventually his songs transcended their original environment, having been learned by millions of Russians through colloquial tradition. His later work has bearing on classical poetry of early XX century.
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the International Center. Plain English translations will be given to most of the songs. See also Dulov's song lyrics on the Net.
MIKHAIL SHCHERBAKOV, a poet from Moscow, is considered by many as one of the summits of modern Russian literature. He is a professional philologist writing both lyrics and music to his songs, who is often said to have created a new genre by himself. Shcherbakov, 33, is perhaps the only author whose high-tech admirers created a host of Internet sites featuring his romantic and skeptical poetry.
English translations of Shcherbakov's lyrics by Tanya Wolfson are available online.
Sherbakov's concert is scheduled on Friday May 17, 7 p.m., at the Visual Arts Performance Space (a new complex at Russel Drive near Eleonor Roosevelt College). It is sponsored by the Visual Arts Department.
The guests will be introduced to the audience by Professor Andrej Broido. Receptions will follow the concerts. For information, see
Admission to both concerts is $10, student/faculty $7. Joint tickets to two concerts will be available at $17, student/faculty $12.
Parking permits are available at $3 at the info booth on Gilman Drive, meters ($1/hour) near the Price center. Twenty spots will be reserved at the International Center on Monday May 13 at 6:00 for free parking.
International Center is located on Mandeville Road near the Library walk at Gilman drive. To Visual Arts facility, proceed further by Gilman, then turn left to Russel Drive near VA Medical Center. Bus routes 30, 34, 41, 301 serve both locations.
